We are thrilled to invite you to our second session of TwinPolitics Ocean Seminar Series on Wednesday, 30th April 2025, from 17:00 to 18:30 (CET). Our guest speaker, Alain Arnaud, Director of the Digital Ocean Department at Mercator Ocean International, managing Mercator Ocean’s DTO program, will present the topic The ongoing construction of the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO).
About the Speaker

Alain Arnaud is the Director of the Digital Ocean Department at Mercator Ocean International, managing Mercator Ocean’s DTO program. He graduated as an engineer from École Polytechnique in Paris(X89) and received his PhD in computer science from INPT in 1997. He worked as a technical manager at the French Space Agency (CNES) and the European SpaceAgency (ESA). In 2000, he founded ALTAMIRA INFORMATION, which grew up to 40employees, with a presence on four continents. It was later acquired by GroupCLS, where he served as Director of Radar Applications until 2015. After two years as a General Partner at Avet Venture, a high-tech specialized venturecapital firm, he joined Mercator in 2017, where he became responsible for the Data and Information Access Program, WEkEO.

Introduction to the Topic

The Digital Twin of the Ocean is a collaborative initiative that enables stakeholders to make science-based decisions based on advanced knowledge of the ocean’s state, thanks to cutting-edge digital tools. It offers a comprehensive framework for ocean experts, scientists, citizens, and stakeholders to better understand our ocean, assess its current state (“Now”), predict its future (“Next”), and make science-based decisions (“What-If”). This is made possible through unified access to ocean information from in situ sensors and satellite sensors, ocean modelling using physical models or AI, and expert applications that transform data into meaningful information for the benefit of all, in a collaborative manner. This collaboration takes advantage of the large number of research networks, research projects, and national and regional initiatives that offer the European (and international) landscape to foster common knowledge of the ocean.
