We are thrilled to invite you to our first session of TwinPolitics Ocean Seminar Series on Wednesday, 26th March 2025, from 17:00 to 18:30 (CET). Our guest speaker, Nicolas Segebarth, Policy Officer in the Ocean, Seas, and Waters Unit of DG Research & Innovation at the European Commission, will present the topic The EU Digital Twin Ocean: A Signature Initiative of the EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters, introducing the EU Digital Twin Ocean and exploring its role in ocean monitoring, prediction, and governance.
About the Speaker
Nicolas Segebarth is Policy Officer at the European Commission. He joined the Healthy Ocean and Seas Unit of DG Research and Innovation in June 2019. He develops and implements research & innovation policy on ocean observation, FAIR data and ocean knowledge under the European Research Framework Programme Horizon Europe. He co-leads the EU Digital Twin Ocean initiative, a main component of the Digital Ocean and Water Knowledge System of the EU Mission Restore our Ocean, Seas and Waters by 2030 and is the European Commission’s Focal Point for the G7 working group Future of the Seas and Ocean Initiative contributing to the development of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research & Innovation Alliance. Nicolas Segebarth has a background in physical chemistry, with a PhD in Chemistry on the physical and chemical effects of acoustic cavitation and has conducted post-doctoral research on nuclear magnetic resonance.
Introduction to the Topic
This presentation will explore the EU Digital Twin Ocean, an advanced system designed to enhance ocean monitoring, prediction, and sustainable management and decision-making. We will discuss how this innovative platform integrates data, predictive modelling, AI-driven simulations, to support marine research, climate resilience, and policymaking. Key applications, from biodiversity conservation to disaster response, will be highlighted, along with the broader role of digital twin technology in global ocean governance.
